Mini-jet Total Cross-sections and Overlap Functions through Bloch-Nordsieck Summation

چکیده
Predictions for total inelastic cross-sections for photon induced processes are discussed in the context of the QCD-inspired minijet model. Large theoretical uncertainties exist, some of them related to the parton distributions of hadrons in impact parameter space. A model for such distribution is presented, based on soft gluon summation. This model incorporates (the salient features of distributions obtained from) the intrinsic transverse momentum behaviour of hadrons. Under the assumption that the intrinsic behaviour is dominated by soft gluon emission stimulated by the scattering process, the b-spectrum becomes softer and softer as the scattering energy increases. In minijet models for the inclusive cross-sections, this will counter the increase from σjet . The impact of parton scattering on the rise of inclusive cross-sections with energy was suggested by Cline and Halzen [1], after such rise was first observed in proton-proton collisions at ISR . Minijet models were put forward to describe quantitatively the further rise at higher energy [2, 3, 4] and eikonal minijet models [5, 6, 7, 8] were subsequently developed to include an increasing number of partonic collisions in QCD resulting from the rapid rise in gluon densities. Hadronic Total Cross-sections Through Soft Gluon Summation in Impact Parameter Space
The Bloch-Nordsieck model for the parton distribution of hadrons in impact parameter space, constructed using soft gluon summation, is investigated in detail. Its dependence upon the infrared structure of the strong coupling constant αs is discussed, both for finite as well as singular, but integrable, αs. The formalism is applied to the prediction of total proton-proton and proton-antiproton c...

An impact parameter representation for soft gluon radiation has been developed to obtain both the initial decrease in pp as well as the subsequent rise of the total cross section tot for pp and p p The rapid rise from the perturbative jets is tamed into the experimentally observed mild increase by soft gluon emission Here we focus on the role played by con nement in particular the need for a si...

Physics Department and INFN, University of Perugia, Perugia, Italy (Received October 26, 2004) The physics underlying the fall and eventual rise in various total crosssections at high energies has been investigated over a decade using a model based on the Bloch–Nordsieck resummation in QCD. Here a brief review of our latest results is presented and comparison made with experimental data on pp, ...

We discuss total cross-sections within the context of the QCD calculable mini-jet model, highlighting its successes and failures. In particular we show its description of γγ → hadrons and compare it with OPAL and L3 data. We extrapolate this result to γ p total cross-sections and propose a phenomenological ansätz for virtual photon cross-sections. We point out that the good agreement with data ...
